Giovio Globe Mercator Globe

Actually, the attachment of Greenland to North America in the Mercator Globe represents a curious departure from its two immediate predecessors: the Gemma Frisius’s globe of 1537 and Mercator’s World Map of 1538.  In both these instances, a strait similar in size and shape to that on the Giovio Globes separates Greenland from North America.  Why did the maker of the Giovio Globe abandon the attachment of Greenland to North America in favor of these earlier, more accurate treatments of a Fretum Articum?
